Suleymaniye Neighborhood / Old Gumushane
Located southwest of the current city center, Süleymaniye Quarter (Eski Gümüşhane) is 4 kilometers from the city center. It has never lost its importance throughout history due to its rich silver and gold mines and its location on the historical silk road. Assyrians, Urartians, Medes, Persian Kingdom, Mechodons, Pontus Kingdom, Roman Empire, Umayyads, Seljuks and Ottoman Empire ruled in the region. The settlement came under Turkish rule in 1461, when Mehmet the Conqueror put an end to the existence of the Trabzon-Pontus Greek State. The city ensured its settlement and development during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. Today, 35 immovable cultural assets such as mosques, churches, baths, bridges, shops, etc. have survived. The settlement is a 3rd Degree Urban and Natural Protected Area and is also a tourism center.
